Today, history has been made in the golfing world. Royal Dornoch is the first golf course in the world to be ‘heart safe’ as they have fitted every golf buggy on the course with a state-of-the-art defibrillator.

David Sullivan and his business partner and ex-England footballer John Salako, from Code Blue CPR, have been campaigning for five years for golf courses to be heart safe after losing four friends to cardiac arrest.

Currently, in the UK, there are more than 30,000 cardiac arrests a year, and less than 8% of people survive. This is a shocking statistic, and their mission is to increase investment in life-saving defibrillators and educate as many people as possible on how to perform CPR. Would you know what to do if someone went into cardiac arrest?

Golf clubs around the UK have been incredible at purchasing defibrillators for their clubhouses, which is fantastic. However, David and John believe that clubs could go one step further to protect their members, providing defibrillators in every golf buggy that the club owns. Why? Because using a defibrillator within three minutes of someone in cardiac arrest significantly increases that person’s chance of survival. Therefore, anyone who is in or close to the clubhouse would likely be within this timeframe. However, due to the size of golf courses, I am sure you will agree that being within three minutes of the clubhouse is quite unlikely after the first hole. Hopefully, it won’t be long before other golf courses follow suit.

If you would like to contact Code Blue CPR, their website is www.codebluecpr.co, where they also offer online CPR and defibrillator sessions for as little as £9.95.

Here are some videos that showcase the historic event at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, where they have become the first golf course in the world to be ‘heart safe’ by fitting every golf buggy with a state-of-the-art defibrillator. These videos highlight the significance of this achievement and the importance of having access to defibrillators in public spaces. Let’s watch and celebrate this milestone together.
